IRS took my refund- what can I do?

I was in default status on my student loan, but I started on a “rehab” program, and have not missed any payments through my student loans’ collection agency so that in a few months I will be able to defer my loan again as I am very poor. My tax preparers’ office said that if the IRS hadn’t garnished my wages for the student loan, then they shouldn’t take my refund. Well, they did. Seven thousand dollars. I support 3 kids and make below $15,000 a year so I use my tax return for emergencies as I can’t save $$ easily otherwise. I am in severe dire straits unless I can get the US Dept of Education to give it back to me. I was planning on paying off my bills and bettering my families future. Please, does anyone know of any loopholes? My family depends on me

You should have contacted Sallie Mae BEFORE you filed your return to see if they would drop the flag on your SSN with FMS. They are the only ones who can drop the flag or refund your money to you now. They do have a hardship program, so it would be worth contacting them.
